About us

In business for over 30 years

Our restaurant, Restaurette Schierzicht, has been in business for over 30 years. In 2021, we—the Gerdes family—added something new: Schierzicht Logement. We opened in 2021 with 9 rooms, and in 2025 we added 9 more rooms, along with an elevator and a lounge. We now have 18 rooms that we are very proud of.

Our accommodation

Everything you need for a pleasant stay

A Logement is a guest accommodation where people can stay. For us, a lodging sits right between a Bed & Breakfast and a hotel. Because we don't only host recreational guests and tourists, but also staff from offshore companies, we are a guest accommodation for everyone.

Our accomodation isn’t just for people who are looking for a comfortable bed and a good breakfast—it’s also for guests who appreciate the view, the surroundings, and the atmosphere. We’re welcoming and open to everyone at our cozy Schierzicht Logement in Lauwersoog, right on the harbor.

Family business

At Schierzicht Logement, hospitality and accessibility are our top priorities. Every day of the year, we do our very best to ensure that you, our guests, have the most enjoyable experience possible, both at our inn and in our restaurant.

We don’t do this on our own, but together with our staff, partners, and suppliers. Because together we’re stronger than we are alone!

History

The family history begins with grandfather Johan Gerdes, who was born in Aurich, Germany. In 1932, he opened his fish stall, called Zoutkamper Vishandel, in Ulrum. Rikus Wilhelm, Rieks’s father, joined the business in 1948, and together they ran the market stall and delivered fish to customers’ homes.

In 1975, Rieks started on his own and opened his own fish stall on the dike in Lauwersoog. The modest stall quickly grew into a beautiful fisherman’s hut with a small terrace. In 1986, the brick building “Restaurette Schierzicht” was constructed, and after numerous expansions and renovations, it still stands today.

In 2017, son Anne Theo Gerdes joined the company, and since then it has been run by Rieks, Anne Theo, and their spouses. We, the Gerdes family, are constantly investing in the business by using fresh, local ingredients of the highest quality. Hospitality and being a good employer are our top priorities.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a top priority for us, which is why we are constantly striving to become more sustainable. In the bathrooms of our accomodation, we use eco-friendly shampoo and shower gel made from plant-based soap. Furthermore, the product is at least 97% biodegradable, 100% vegan, and comes in packaging made from 100% recycled plastic.

A green hotel

We also believe it’s important to make our businesses more environmentally friendly. For example, our accomodation is completely gas-free, our roofs are covered with solar panels, and we use sustainable packaging materials in our restaurant and accomodation. Schierzicht Logement is heated by a heat pump, and the solar panels on the roof generate electricity for the business and for the electric car chargers.

A Day Trip to Schiermonnikoog

You can already see Schiermonnikoog, the smallest of the Wadden Islands, in the distance from our guesthouse. Wagenborg ships make daily crossings to Schiermonnikoog from the port of Lauwersoog. The ferry ride to the car-free island of Schiermonnikoog takes about 45 minutes.

Camping Siblu - Lauwersoog

A camping site with a unique location, situated right on the shores of Lauwersmeer. Children can burn off their energy at the indoor and outdoor (water) playgrounds. E-bikes, bicycles, and SUPs are available for rent. The campground also features a restaurant and a small grocery store.

The World Heritage Center in the harbor of Lauwersoog has been open since 2025 and is a special place where nature, education, and research come together. The building houses the seal center, where researchers and students conduct studies on the Wadden Sea, and where visitors can learn all about the unique ecosystem of the Wadden Sea region.

DoeZoo – Leens

At the DoeZoo, everyone—young and old—can explore nature with all their senses. The DoeZoo is a zoo where nature becomes an exciting experience.

Landgoed Verhildersum – Leens

The museum estate tells the story of the Hogeland region in the 19th century—focusing on the relationship between the nobility, the peasantry, and the laborers. The estate is surrounded by 33 hectares of farmland, a farmhouse, and a laborers’ cottage. In addition to its history, Verhildersum is also a destination for its flora and fauna, including nocturnal animals and hibernating bats. Every third Saturday of the month, a local market is held at the manor featuring products from the region.

Waddenfun is located 15 minutes from Lauwersoog and is the largest indoor climbing park in the Netherlands: 45 bridges and over 300 meters of zip lines. A challenge for everyone—young and old, experienced and inexperienced alike.

Lauwersmeer Region - Schierzicht Logement

The closure of the Lauwerszee through the construction of a dam led to the creation of Lauwersmeer in 1969. To this day, the former seabed teems with life—from sea eagles to orchids. The natural environment of Lauwersmeer is so special and unique that the area has been designated as Lauwersmeer National Park.

Lauwersmeer is famous for its abundance of birds. More than 100 species of birds nest here, and tens of thousands of geese spend the winter here every year. The birds make this National Park an irresistible wilderness for every birdwatcher and nature lover.

Lauwersmeer National Park is also a great place to spot rare birds. You can see black-winged stilts, spoonbills, and grey-headed lapwings there. From the Hemelplatform near Suyderoogh, you’ll have the best view during the day (with binoculars) of the island where the white-tailed eagle has its nest and has been breeding for several years now.

Experience the darkness in the Wadden Sea region

Sinds oktober 2016 draagt het Nationaal Park Lauwersmeer officieel het predicaat Dark Sky Park. Dit is een gebied waar de duisternis behouden blijft en er in ieder geval géén kunstmatig licht voorkomt.

Visitors are welcome to visit the Dark Sky Park at night to experience the darkness and enjoy a clear starry sky.

The observation deck at Suyderoogh is a fantastic spot for birdwatching during the day and ideal for stargazing at night.
