Lauwersoog Harbor is primarily a fishing port. The harbor came into being during the closure of Lauwersmeer in 1969. The former Rijkswaterstaat work island was spontaneously adopted by the fishing industry as a home port, due to its proximity to the fishing grounds. While there is some recreational and industrial activity in the harbor, the majority of its operations have emerged as a result of or are linked to the fishing industry.
Both the fishing industry and the port itself are under pressure. More and more fishing grounds are being closed to make way for wind farms. Precisely where the seabed is shallower and fishing has taken place for hundreds of years, fishing grounds are increasingly being closed off to make way for the construction of wind farms.
The Port of Lauwersoog is a strong advocate of sustainable energy generation, but also recognizes that fishing grounds are shrinking significantly. The port itself is under pressure, as ports of this size are barely able to survive without government support.
Haven Lauwersoog is zeker voorstander van windparken, maar dan met behoud van voldoende visgronden en aandacht voor het “recht van overpad” of “gewoonterecht” van de visserij.
