The closure of the Lauwerszee through the construction of a dam led to the creation of Lauwersmeer in 1969. To this day, the former seabed teems with life—from sea eagles to orchids. The natural environment of Lauwersmeer is so special and unique that the area has been designated as Lauwersmeer National Park.
Since October 2016, Lauwersmeer National Park has officially held the designation of Dark Sky Park. This is an area where darkness is preserved and where there is absolutely no artificial light. Visitors are welcome in the Dark Sky Park at night to experience the darkness and enjoy a clear starry sky. The sky platform at Suyderoogh is a fantastic bird-watching spot during the day and ideal for stargazing at night. The sky platform features wooden planks that serve as headrests, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the starry sky and the Dark Sky Park.
During your stay, you can enjoy breakfast and dinner without a care in the world.
